Autonomous Buses in Rural Regions

Autonomous Buses in Rural Regions

Currently, 61 projects in Germany focused on autonomous buses in public transport are in various stages of development, most of them in urban areas. Sixteen are based in rural areas.

These pilot projects are testing automation in public transport and setting the course for the regular operation of autonomous buses. Most of these projects receive the bulk of their funding from the federal government, but also from the states of Thuringia, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt as well as from the European Union. The majority of the 16 projects address the challenges of sustainable mobility in rural areas. All of the projects are focused on further developing the technology and boosting acceptance.
